NORDBERG SYMONS™ cone crushers have a worldwide reputation as being durable, reliable, and easy to maintain. That is because they were manufactured in the United States using quality steel, put together by craftsmen who took pride in what they built, and the final products are being used around the world, even after seeing over 80-90 years of service. Do not be fooled by the imitation crushers made in China that look like the original Symons cone crushers. Their steel is not the same quality, their workers are poorly paid and are not the same craftsmen who have spent their lives making quality crushers. They are cheaper in price, but will not last very long. Most of my customers from around the world specifically state they do not want Chinese made crushers. Either they or fellow quarry operators have learned the hard way, you get what you pay for. Since the demand is greater than the supply, an option is to purchase a good used crusher also made in the United States. For example Telsmith, Allis Chalmers, and El Jay. Both Allis Chalmers and Telsmith were also manufactured in Wisconsin using the same great steel and craftsmen. Telsmith is still in business and making new crushers, and they have very good product support for their older crushers. Allis Chalmers was purchased by Metso Minerals, but most parts can be obtained from other sources. There are many large mines around the world still using the Allis Chalmers Gyratory crushers, many over 50 years old and having crushed millions of tons of rock. The Allis Chalmers Hydrocone crushers are also still being used around the world. There are good alternatives to the Symons cone crushers that were manufactured in the United States.

Cone crushers are normally used as a secondary crusher but can be used as a primary crusher if used in processing a sand and gravel deposit. Normally a jaw crusher is used for the initial or primary crushing of larger rocks. The average standard head cone crusher has an average reduction ratio of 6-10:1. That means an average rock will be fractured into 6-10 smaller rocks after passing through a cone crusher. A shorthead, also known as a fine cone crusher, typically has a 4-6:1 ratio.

The maximum size of your target final product will be a good guide to whether you need a standard or fine cone crusher, either as a secondary crusher or a tertiary crusher.

Cone crusher capacity is primarily determined by the closed side discharge setting and the diameter of the cone's mantle.

Cone crusher capacity will be increased if the maximum final target product size and everything smaller is scalped (removed) prior to being fed into the crusher.

The cone crusher's feed chute should be arranged  to provide a uniform and consistent amount of feed material so it is distributed evenly around the head and keeps the crushing chamber filled at all times if possible.  

The size of the cone must match the entire crushing circuit. That means the feed system, scalping system, jaw crusher, cone crusher, and screens must all be designed to work together.

Because raw feed consists of various sizes of rocks, a good screening process will enable you to use the smallest crusher while still obtaining the greatest production capacity.  That will save you both capital costs and operating costs.

A 200 tons per hour (TPH) capacity plant does not requires a jaw and cone to each have a 200 TPH capacity. We offer a service using a computer program that can provide a good estimation of what size of crushers and screens will be needed to produce a target tons per hour. There are several choices in buying a used cone crusher:

Buying just the bare cone crusher
Buying the cone crusher already on a frame
Buying a portable cone crusher

Buying a bare cone crusher costs the least amount, both in initial cost of the crusher itself, but also because of the reduced cost of land and ocean freight. We have been able to pack 3', 4' and 4 1/4' cone crushers into a container. That saves a considerable amount in ocean freight, and also protects the crusher and its components from the weather and from pilferage. It is also possible to purchase a bare cone crusher that needs repairs, which also can reduce the initial capital costs.

Purchasing a cone crusher that is already set-up on a stand or skid frame will shorten the time needed to start production. It also can save money and time trying to obtain and fabricate the necessary materials or components.  It is also possible to remove the cone from the stand, dismantle the stand, and ship the entire package inside a container. That would again save in ocean freight. Of course the more equipment that is included, the greater the cost. A skid type frame can be as portable as a portable crushing plant. Many times the skid unit can be pulled onto the lowboy and transported as one unit. That saves the cost of maintaining the axles, tires, and bearings on a portable crushing plant. A skid mounted plant also costs less than a portable plant.

Portable cone crushing plants are very convenient when moving constantly. They also are the most expensive to purchase initially. They have a higher cost when transporting by land and ocean carrier.

It is more difficult to determine the condition of cone crushers than it is jaw crushers. Most of the working area of the manganese is hidden from view. There are also bearings and bushings that cannot be seen. Cone crushers also use various seals that cannot be seen which can wear and harden with time. It is important to find out some history on the cone crusher, including application, maintenance and repair history, and was it operating when removed from service.

The cone crusher has been around for for over 120 years and operates very similarly the same. In the early years some of the manufacturers were Symons (Nordberg), Telsmith, Allis Chalmers, and Kue Ken. Many of those old crushers are still working today even though they are over 60 years old. Some of the most popular worldwide include Symons,
Telsmith, Cedarapids, JCI, Allis Chalmers, Pegson, and El-Jay.
